From her book ‘This is Why You’re Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever)’

I didn’t want to like Jackie Warner.   Her show WORKOUT was cancelled because of an insensitive comment about the shape of a woman’s breasts (the woman had recently undergone reconstructive surgery), and she comes across like many celebrity fitness trainers; loud, brash, ego-infused and annoying.

Then I purchased her book.

Now generally I’m not a fan of health and fitness books.  Bottom line, I’m too impatient to read them.  I would much rather launch myself into a fitness DVD program which I will commit myself to for all of five days, and then quit because I’m bored and not seeing results.   But following the old adage, ‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results’, I purchased Jackie’s book in the hopes of breaking the ridiculous cycle I was caught up in.

I don’t regret the decision.

Jackie fought hard for the title of the book.  It’s pretty inflammatory, and she knew it would get people’s attention, even if only to annoy them (hopefully into action.)  Her belief is ‘it’s not your fault you’re fat, staying fat is.’  Well.

I have been the not-so-proud owner of approximately five pounds of unwanted belly fat, and two or three pounds each of thigh fat, that no matter how much I diet, or what exercise I engage in (for about five days), is bound and determined to stick around.  According to Jackie, having the fat is not my fault; being unable to shed it, is.

Well, thus challenged, my interest was piqued enough to open page one and keep going.

She begins by telling you about hormonal and chemical imbalances and harmful toxins in your body, which are literally preventing you from losing weight.  I suppose it makes perfect sense that a sick body isn’t in any condition to do much more than drag itself through the day; let alone attempt to turn itself into a fat-busting, metabolic furnace.  And why are our bodies so out of whack?  Because of the foods we eat.   Sugars (White Death), preservatives and carbonation (Black Death) are literally poisoning our bodies.  And Jackie makes one thing perfectly clear…fat is not the enemy-sugar is.

So what does she do to clean up the junkyard that is our inners?  Well, first off she has you incorporate healthy foods into your regular diet for two weeks.   This way you are not thrown into such a radically changed diet, that you freak out completely after three days, and binge at every fast food restaurant in town.  You are also eating foods that will now help balance the hormones in your body instead of sabotaging them.  After two weeks you start her clean eating plan.  It’s not too horrible either.  She has a rule that you should eat no more than 9 grams of sugar a day, and sugar is hidden in a lot of surprising foods, so always read labels.  And organic is best.  Your eating regime will consist of three meals and two snacks a day so your metabolism is working optimally.  You will balance proteins with carbohydrates, and if the portion size fits into the palm of your hand, it’s ‘cool.’  Jackie gives plenty of menu items to keep you interested, and it seems you certainly won’t go hungry.  At the weekends, you are allowed two junk meals, as long as they both stay below 1,500 calories.  Again this is so you do not feel like you are denying yourself and are prone to go on a binging spree.  (You’ll probably find after a week or so of clean eating, that junk tastes bad anyway.  I’ve experienced this first-hand with the ‘Body for Life’ program.)

Jackie also incorporates exercise into her book, and I’m not going to lie, it’s strenuous.  But she has it cut down to twenty minutes a day, which for people like me with little time for working out, is a dream come true.  I’ve tried her tips for a maximum aerobic experience, and a circuit of 2 minutes speed walking at the highest incline on my treadmill, followed by 2 minutes sprinting, a minute’s slow walk rest and then 3 repetitions until you reach 20 minutes, is KILLER.  I burn the same amount of calories as running my usual 40 minutes.  Plus I can really feel my thigh muscles working on the climb.   I haven’t ‘womaned up’ to Jackie’s upper and low body free weight circuit training sessions yet, but the idea is you take three upper, and three lower exercises and alternate them without resting for optimum fat burning results.   I’ll eat my Wheaties before attempting.

Bottom line, for someone who comes across as an uncaring freight train, ready to run you over if you don’t jump aboard the Jackie Warner Express, in her book, she actually talks to the soul of you with compassion and understanding.  I don’t believe Jackie’s ever been fat, but she does seem to emphasize with those of us who don’t resemble her tone-to-the-bone physique and want to.  She doesn’t beat around the bush; she exposes your fat, scrutinizes it and prepares you to blast it with the tenacity and ferocity of a drill sergeant.

Side note: this book will only work if you actually read it and employ physical application and effort.  Otherwise you’ve wasted $20 on another read destined to sit on the bookshelf until you hawk it in a yard sale.
